A Message from the SARS President

Dear SARS Members,

Walking off the plane after a weeklong hiking and sightseeing trip in the cool upper Midwest, I was confronted abruptly with the problem our roses are facing again this summer. Heat, heat, and more heat. Which of course calls for water, water, and more water. This is normal and will call for the usual treatments. So far, I have seen few insect problems except thrips, but I am sure others will make their appearance.

Blooms on some of my new roses are making their appearance and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of others. Trying new varieties is exciting. Sometimes the variety doesn’t meet expectations, but often it is a wonderful surprise. I have fallen in love with several of the new David Bang varieties such as Sacrificial Love, Mango Blush, and Unfailing Love. Stee Roussel’s Vibrant Vonnie and Liz’ Charm are promising though still too new to evaluate. As you go through the summer, evaluate your roses. If you have plants that are not excelling, start planning replacements with a new variety to spice up your gardens.

Happy to be home. Look forward to seeing you at the July meeting.
